New York, New York

I would never have to worry about exercise if I lived in New York.

When Mark and I were first dating we lived far apart and loved to meet in New York when we had a free weekend.  It was our habit to get up late, go to a diner for breakfast and then start walking.  We would walk all day, stop for the occasional coffee or ice cream and finally stumble in to a randomly picked restaurant for a meal and a bottle of wine before we found our way back to our hotel.  Old habits die hard.  We still walk in New York… a lot. Both days ticked over 20,000 steps on my fitbit which did wonders for my averages.

After Emily’s busy graduation weekend and my minor “empty-nest” breakdown, we packed up the car and went to PA to visit with family for a few days.  We decided that since our flight to Europe was out of Newark we would pay a quick visit to New York before we left.

We walked, we ate (at my favorite pre-theatre restaurant due to the gluten-free pizza) and we we indulged our other New York habit…theatre. We had two nights in New York which meant two nights of theatre.  We saw Blackbird with Jeff Daniels and Michelle Williams and the amazing performance of The Crucible.  Both are well worth seeing. Blackbird is a really provocative and though-provoking script and Jeff Daniel’s performance was outstanding.  I was personally disappointed in Michelle Williams performance and sat there wishing I was 25 years younger as I often do lately when I see a really juicy part.  The Crucible was stunning, moving and beautiful acted by all (it also happened to be one of my favorite plays) and it didn’t hurt that we were in the 2nd row center for a sold out show.

We buy all of our tickets the day of the show and we refuse to pay full Broadway prices so we have a few tricks.  Most theatre junkies will know these but I thought it was worth a separate blog post (Best Same Day Broadway Discounts) in case there were some NY newbies reading.

We are now hanging in Scotland for a week with family.  “Zed” our trusty Mazda started right on cue after hanging in his winter home since last August.  Mark gave him a wash and had his Mum clean the inside until it sparkled.  We are also here to celebrate her 94th birthday so I am not sure she should be crawling around the inside our car - but what can you do.

The next step of the journey is a drive to Paris where we will spend 5 days enjoying the European Championships and some more city wandering.

Some pics from our wanders.  We are just learning about photography so you will have to bear with us as we slowly improve.
